A Queen's Award is the highest honour that can be bestowed on a UK business. To have a Queen's Award is to be acknowledged the best in your field - this does not just add prestige, it helps your company to win more business.

April 2000

World leading thermal analysis software developer, Flomerics Group plc, has won a Queen's Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category for 2000. With exports accounting for almost 90% of its ?.7m turnover, the Surrey-based company commands an estimated 80% share of the world market with its software programs Flotherm and Flovent. Despite fierce competition from American rivals, Flomerics produces almost 50% of its revenues from the USA and Canada alone.

Flomerics provides engineering analysis software and services, which enhance productivity in engineering design for the electronics and building services industries. Its world leading Flotherm, for the thermal analysis of electronic systems, and Flovent, for the analysis of airflow and heat transfer in buildings, were the first industry-specific computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software programs of their kind.

Dr. Mike Reynell, Director of Marketing at Flomerics, said: "Our success in international trade is largely due to our strategy of setting up small, wholly-owned subsidiary companies and branches worldwide - rather than relying on indirect channels to promote our software. This strategy requires more effort and investment in the early stages, but pays off in the end both for us and for our customers because we end up with highly trained and knowledgeable people who are committed to supporting Flomerics' products. We operate in an extremely competitive market and an award of this nature indicates to our existing and potential customers that Flomerics and its products are highly regarded throughout the world. The excellent level of all-round service we provide is also clearly demonstrated by the fact that more than 80% of customers renew their licences every year - a very high figure in this business."

In addition to commercial success, the Queen's Award for Enterprise also takes account of winners' corporate responsibility. In this context, Flomerics has impressive credentials, regularly supporting local charities, actively using recycled and chlorine-free paper, and recycling its own office paper and cardboard. Flomerics is also currently engaged in the Investors In People (IIP) accreditation process.

Last year, Flomerics completed its first acquisition and strengthened its position in the electronics sector by acquiring Nottingham-based electromagnetics experts Kimberley Communications Consultants (KCC). This merger opens up substantial cross-selling opportunities and has bridged the gap between thermal management and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues in electronics design for the first time. Flomerics now offers a unique combination of best-in-class tools addressing these two critical, related design problems, thus enhancing engineering productivity in the electronics industry.
