A New Web-Based Product That Enhances Engineering Design Productivity By Providing Rapid Communication Between The FLOTHERM Thermal Design Software And EDA Tools

Design Engineers can now further enhance their productivity using FLO/EDA from Flomerics (www.floeda.com), a new Web-based software product for the rapid creation of thermal models of Printed Circuit Boards (PCB’s). FLO/EDA reads Intermediate Data Format (IDF)1 data files - a format supported by all major EDA (Electronic Design Automation) software vendors including Cadence, Mentor Graphics and Zuken-Redac. 
Users of FLO/EDA upload an IDF board layout file via a standard web browser. The IDF file contains details of the board shape (including any cut-outs or unusual shapes), as well as component size and placement. As soon as the board file is uploaded, an immediate 3-D visual check can be made using any VRML2 enabled browser. 
The information required to create valid thermal models of the components is not usually stored on the IDF file. FLO/EDA cleverly solves this problem by matching each component against a central database and adding the required thermal information. Finally, a "power list" is created, either by hand or by exporting from a power simulator. The power list defines the power dissipated by each component (which depends on how it is being used in the circuit).
The combined information is then used to generate a ready-to-run thermal model of the complete board, for execution in Flotherm.
